Your numbers up: uni applications on the rise
It’s fairly common knowledge that in 2012 tuition fees are going up quite a bit. Being a thrifty
lot, university applicants are slugging it out more than ever to get a place this year, at this year’s
prices.
For those fighting for a place, there’s going to be three applicants for every two places. Ouch.
There are lots of reasons for the sudden rush; more 19 and 20 year olds that have been umming
and erring about uni have let their wallets make up their minds, everyone who didn’t get in last
year is having another go and gap years and deferred entry aren’t as popular as they used to be
now they carry an extra six grand a year price tag.
Petitions and protests aside, there’s not an awful lot you can do about this. If you’ve deferred
entry, you can phone up your university and ask to be considered for entry this year. Most
universities have a page on their website telling you how to do this, if not someone at their end
will know the answers and they’ll sort it out for you, although you may have to cry.
On the other hand, if you’re not too fussed about the extra pounds, why not consider a gap
year? Most unis will let you defer entry to next year, guaranteeing your place and gap years can
be a great chance to save some cash, see the world or swot up.
